Tokyo 2020 Unveils Official Logos

Here they are!

I kinda like it. In my book... it's not as big of a misstep as London 2012, but not as big of a home run as Vancouver 2010.

What do you think?

PyeongChang 2018 Debuts Official Logo

I'm a little late on this one, but PyeongChang recently debuted their final official logo for the Winter 2018 Olympic Games. I have to be honest, I'm not crazy about it. I'm sure it will grow on me as I see it more and more, but it seems like a misstep similar to the London 2012 logo.

Here are some official details released regarding the logo:

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic emblem is an abstract motif inspired by Hangul, the alphabet of the phonetic Korean language.
It is composed of the first consonants of the name of the host city, PyeongChang.

The 'ㅍ'(P) is the first consonant of the first syllable, Pyeong. It also symbolises the open square where the celebration of athletes and winter sports will take place.

The 'ㅊ'(Ch) is the first consonant of the second syllable, Chang. It symbolises the natural environment of snow and ice, and the stellar achievements of the athletes - the stars of the Games.

The colours reflect the Olympic Flag, and they also represent the five traditional colours of Korea.

Taken together, the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic emblem embodies the harmonious synergy between the sky, land and people. Set in a majestic setting of snow and ice, athletes and people from around the world come together in an open square in PyeongChang to celebrate the finest winter sport athletes and the greatest winter sport festival.

Olympics Shirts at GAP Stores

Gap stores in the USA currently have shirts with popular Olympics logo and mascots on them. I had intended to share this a few weeks back but hadn't got the chance. The good news is now that the London Olympics are over the shirts are on clearance! They were originally $24.99 each but are now down to $14.99 which is a much more reasonable price to begin with. At our mall there is a Gap, Gap Baby, and Gap Kids and they all had different shirts aimed at their specific demographic. Go out and get them now before they're gone!

Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games logo unveiled

Nanjing unveiled their logo for the 2014 Youth Olympic Game recently. All the press I've seen related to it seems to prefer the word emblem over logo, but here it is regardless. I'm fairly indifferent about it. Looks okay. Seems like they are going for the same look as London 2012.

You can find out more info here.

New NBC Olympics logo for London 2012

I stumbled across this logo while poking around on the NBCUniversal corporate website. The logo can be seen on the left in the image above. Pretty straight forward, yet still classy in my opinion. Well done NBC.

Beautifully imagined Fortaleza 2020 bid materials

From artist Guilherme Villar;

A fictional 2020 Olympic Games project for the city of Fortaleza in northern Brazil. An identity system was created around the primary and secondary logos which emerged from the concept of unity and the environment. The diagonal rectangles can be seen as fanning out from its center to take the circular shape of the sun, or windmill. They can also be seen as coming together, overlapping, and uniting. My goal was to combine both the philosophy of the Olympics games and the qualities, traits, and characteristics particular of Fortaleza

Rio 2016 unveils official logo!

Rio 2016 unveiled their official logo at a New Years celebration yesterday. I'm not quite sure what to think of it. At first I didn't "get" it, but I didn't hate it either. After spending a little time with it and reading a little more about it I can say I'm satisfied with it. I'm neither excited nor appalled by it. According to Rio 2016 the emblem represents the idea of "Harmonious Diversity" that is a part of their branding. I dig it and I'm sure it will grow on me over time. Congrats to Rio on their first big public step towards the 2016 Summer Games.

You can read more about the Logo and it's launch over at Google News.

From the press release:

The Innsbruck 2012 Organising Committee for the first Winter Youth Olympic Games (Innsbruck 2012) today launched its new emblem at a Youth Olympic Games Night at Austria House in Whistler, Canada.

Munich 2018 artwork

Munich is one of the three cities bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Graphic designer Kevin Wilson has posted some beautiful artwork on his website related to Munich 2018. It is unclear whether or not this is official artwork that has been commissioned or if this is just an artistic exercise. Either way it's some great graphic design. It seems somewhat inspire by the London 2012 design philosophy, especially if you look at the sport pictograms, but in my opinion the execution overall is much better. Bravo!

The winning city will be chosen at the IOC Session in Durban on July 6, 2011.

Sochi unveils new Olympic logo

The emblem for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi was unveiled Tuesday, based on the unique use of an internet domain name of the Russian organizing committee.

It is the first time that an internet domain features in an Olympic emblem.

The words 'sochi.ru' are written above the number '2014,' with the five Olympic rings also part of the emblem. The number 2014 is written as a reflection under the word Sochi, both in blue letters. the .ru domain ending appears above the Olympic rings.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's not bad, in the way London 2012 is, but at the same time it doesn't feel like a "logo" in the traditional sense. It is indeed thinking outside the box. I like that they tried something different and didn't fall on their face with it. It's also cool that the logo itself identifies which country Sochi is actually in. I'm guessing that most people who are not big Olympics fans would not immediately know where it is. The more I'm thinking and writing about it the more I like it. Well done.

Here is a new report from Russia Today:

Munich 2018 Unveils New Candidate City Logo

Munich was first out of the blocks to launch its logo for their bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, just a day after applications to stage the Games officially closed.

Duncan Mackay of Inside the Games reports the following:
The logo, always an emotive subject as London 2012 discovered two years ago, was chosen following a nationwide vote of 50,000 Germans, which Munich officials claimed demonstrates the support for their bid which is seeking to make history by being the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games.

The winning design, which is based on a mountain range and could be interpreted as being the half-pipe in snowboarding or a ski jump, that was chosen came from leading Munich design agency, Zeichen & Wunder.

It was unveiled in the shadow of the futuristic Olympiapark that staged the 1972 Summer Games, with its sweeping canopies of acrylic glass stabilised by metal ropes and where the winners included Britain's Mary Peters in the pentathlon and America's Frank Shorter in the marathon, and which still takes the breath away even after all these years.

Obey Propaganda 1989 Olympic Style Shirt

I came across this Obey shirt in a small shop in Fullerton a little while back. The logo is a riff on the 1984 Olympics logo. I snapped a quick pic with my phone, but I wish I would have bought it. I haven't been able to find it since.

Logo Unveiled For Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games

My Take: Looks alright. Pretty generic.

From GamesBids.com:
The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games logo was officially launched today by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports.

"The Launch of the logo today is a major milestone for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games,” said Mr NG Ser Miang, Chairman of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC). “The logo is an important symbol of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. It embodies the vision of Singapore 2010 - Inspiring Youth, Sporting Singapore, and expresses the significance and legacy that we hope Singapore 2010 will have on the lives of Singaporeans and youths around the world before, during and after the Games.”

Singapore won a bid to host the first Youth Olympic Games in an International Olympic Committee election in February last year. Moscow was defeated in the vote.

The logo has been name "Spirit of Youth and is designed to celebrate Singapore 2010 "in an adventurous, open and fun way", according to a press release. It was chosen after the organizing committee held a logo design contest last year and reviewed hundreds of submissions.

It combines various key elements including a red flame to represent the passion to learn and power of positive thinking; a purple star to symbolize excellence and the pride of representing one's nation and a crescent to reflect dynamic youth full of promise.

The active appearance of the "Singapore 2010" word mark comprises individual and unique characters that signify harmony among the diverse participants. The Spirit of Youth inspires all of us to express the Olympic spirit and celebrate the first-ever Youth Olympic Games.

The logo was launched during a day long event featuring non-competitive sports activities for youths at the Singapore Management University Campus Green.

NBC Quietly Introcuces Its Vancouver 2010 Logo

(Click the image above to the the logo in it's original context)

While browsing the web this evening I noticed that NBC had quietly updated their Olympics website with their new logo for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Please note that this is NOT the official logo for the games, just merely the logo NBC will use for it's coverage. I like it. It's not insanely great, but it's classy.

Chicago 2016 updates logo

Chicago 2016 has updated their logo to reflect their new status as an official candidate for the 2016 games. Looks nice to me! :D
