PyeongChang 2018 Debuts Official Logo

I'm a little late on this one, but PyeongChang recently debuted their final official logo for the Winter 2018 Olympic Games. I have to be honest, I'm not crazy about it. I'm sure it will grow on me as I see it more and more, but it seems like a misstep similar to the London 2012 logo.

Here are some official details released regarding the logo:

The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic emblem is an abstract motif inspired by Hangul, the alphabet of the phonetic Korean language.
It is composed of the first consonants of the name of the host city, PyeongChang.


The 'ㅍ'(P) is the first consonant of the first syllable, Pyeong. It also symbolises the open square where the celebration of athletes and winter sports will take place.

The 'ㅊ'(Ch) is the first consonant of the second syllable, Chang. It symbolises the natural environment of snow and ice, and the stellar achievements of the athletes - the stars of the Games.



The colours reflect the Olympic Flag, and they also represent the five traditional colours of Korea.

Taken together, the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic emblem embodies the harmonious synergy between the sky, land and people. Set in a majestic setting of snow and ice, athletes and people from around the world come together in an open square in PyeongChang to celebrate the finest winter sport athletes and the greatest winter sport festival.

Pyeongchang to host 2018 Winter Olympics!!!

Pyeongchang has successfully won the bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics!! The vote was held in Durban, South Africa this morning. I completely flipped my opinion on this bid over the last year. Originally I had been pulling for Munich, but I changed my tune more recently. My daughter started kindergarten this year and is learning Korean. Her school teaches Korean and our family has grown very fond of the country over the past year. I held no ill will for them before I had only preferred to see a different country selected after Pyeongchan's first two bids were unsuccessful. We watched the announcement live this morning and we are all very excited. 2018 is a long ways off but it is possible that this may be the first Olympics that I attend! 평창 축하합니다!

Three Cities Officially Submit Bids for 2018 Winter Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee has announced that three cities have been put forward by their respective National Olympic Committees to apply to host the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and XII Paralympic Winter Games in 2018. The cities, in alphabetical order, are: Annecy (France), Munich (Germany) and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea).

The three Applicant Cities will now proceed to Phase 1 of the IOC’s two-step procedure, which will lead to the election of the 2018 host city in Durban, South Africa, in July 2011. Phase 1, called the Candidature Acceptance Procedure, involves a thorough review by the IOC of each city’s potential to organise successful Olympic Winter Games in 2018. Cities must answer a questionnaire, and their answers are studied by the IOC, before the IOC Executive Board selects the cities that will become Candidate Cities and therefore move on to Phase 2.

Personally I would love to see it go to Munich! It would be a great to see it as the first city to host both the Summer and Winter games.
