Obama made the friendly wager with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper before Sunday’s U.S.-Canada gold medal game. Canada beat the United States 3-2 on Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama had a case of Yuengling, a Pennsylvania regional brew, riding on the game. Harper wagered 24 bottles of Molson. The beer battle pitted Canada’s oldest brewery against the oldest beer maker in the United States. Molson Canada is now a subsidiary of Molson Coors Brewing Co., a marriage of Molson and Denver-based Coors.
There was no word on where the cross-border exchange would occur.

WHERE IS THE BLU-RAY?! This is the same complaint here that I had about the Beijing 2008 highlights DVD... with all the HD coverage being touted by NBC why are they only offering the home video release of the highlights reel in standard def on DVD? If you must own this on DVD you can pre-order it here. As for my self, I'll be waiting until NBC releases these on Blu-ray before I pick them up. Maybe it'll be the highlights reel for London 2012?

High-flying defending Olympic gold medalist Shaun White showcasing his electrifying 'double cork' trick in snowboarding's halfpipe

Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremony
I watched the Opening Ceremony with my family and a few friends last night. We all enjoyed it very much! The commentary didn't seem as intrusive as it did with the Beijing 2008 Opening Ceremony and NBC put together a nice vignette leading into the broadcast. (I actually learned a few new things about Canada!)
We really liked that they included the "first nations" of Canada. It was great to see and learn about the many different cultures residing within the country.
The parade of nations was particularly fun this year because our daughter was very curous about all the different countries. We talked about everything from where they live in the world to the colors of their flags. I really enjoyed it!
The projection system and show they put on was awesome. My favorite parts where the whales swimming through the floor, the "beat poet" speaking about Canada, the depiction of Vancouver as a modern city, and the singing of the Olympic hymn.
Lastly, but certainly not least, I found minute of silence to honor Nodar Kumaritashvii particularly moving. I'm glad they they took the time to do so.

Awesome Google logo up on the website today!
This image is currently on the Google home page.
I suspect that the logo will change each day through the duration of the winter games.
Update 2/13/10: They are indeed posting a new one each day. Today is Luge.
I will refrain from updating this post everyday with the new ones, but at the end of the games I'll try to create one post that includes all the images.
Nicely done Google!

Tragedy in Vacouver prior to Opening Ceremonies
Kumaritashvili, preparing for his first training run Friday 2/12/10. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)
I just saw some very sad news at online about a crash during training that killed a luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia. His name is Nodar Kumaritashvili. There have been reports that the track, which potentially is the worlds fastest, is actually too fast. Some concern has arose whether athletes from smaller nations -- like Georgia -- had enough time to prepare for the daunting track.
Kumaritashvili has been competing in luge for just two years. He was ranked 55th in the World Cup rankings in 2008-09.
Training was suspended as Olympic officials met to review the situation.
Our prayers go out to his family and countrymen.

Nanjing to host 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014
[PRESS RELEASE]
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today elected Nanjing, People's Republic of China, as the host city of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014 during the 122nd IOC Session in Vancouver, Canada. Nanjing received 47 votes to edge out runner-up Poznan, Poland, which received 42 votes.
“We had two outstanding candidatures from two fantastic cities. Both expressed the spirit of the Youth Olympic Games and both were capable of staging the event,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge. “We are looking forward to working with Nanjing, and are confident the Youth Olympic Games in 2014 will be a success.”
Some 3,600 athletes ranging in ages from 15 to 18 are expected to compete at the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014, which will feature competitions in 26 sports.
President Rogge will soon establish a Coordination Commission to assist Nanjing throughout its preparation period.
“The preparation period for the second summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games will take four-and-a-half years, which will allow Nanjing to match both the expectations of the IOC and the athletes in producing a programme of sport, culture and education that is of the very highest standard,” Rogge added.
The Youth Olympic Games are the culmination of the IOC’s determination to reach out to young people. Far more than merely being about competition, the Games are also a platform on which young people can learn about the Olympic values and the benefits of sport, while sharing their experiences with people from around the globe.
Nanjing became the first Youth Olympic Games host city directly elected in an IOC Session; previously Singapore (2010) and Innsbruck (2012) were selected by IOC members via postal vote.

Arbie the Torchbearer
This little guy caught my eye in an ad on the official Vancouver 2010 website. I'm not sure if he is representative of the RBC or the Torchbearer program in general, but I love the design! Well done! When I saved the image off the website it is labeled "Arbie_w_Torch" so I figure that's his name.

Munich 2018 artwork
Munich is one of the three cities bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Graphic designer Kevin Wilson has posted some beautiful artwork on his website related to Munich 2018. It is unclear whether or not this is official artwork that has been commissioned or if this is just an artistic exercise. Either way it's some great graphic design. It seems somewhat inspire by the London 2012 design philosophy, especially if you look at the sport pictograms, but in my opinion the execution overall is much better. Bravo!
The winning city will be chosen at the IOC Session in Durban on July 6, 2011.

PyeongChang 2018 debuts new logo
Interesting. And I do like it better than their last two.
According to a press release the logo shows the "spectacular" winter scenery of PyeongChang with snow on the mountains. The dynamics of the Olympics and the challenge spirit to victory was represented by the "gushing" curve which implies the strong will to win the bid with the curve symbolizing a snowboard and slope of winter sports.
The South Korean city is competing with Annecy, France and Munich, Germany to become the Olympic host - the decision will be made July 6, 2011. Via.
